Legal analysts have stressed that using illicit receivers or satellite decoders to access encrypted sports channels could result in severe penalties, including fines ranging from Dh10,000 to Dh100,000, and possibly imprisonment. The repercussions are even more stringent for those involved in the production, sale, or distribution of piracy equipment, with penalties escalating to include prison sentences and fines that could reach up to Dh700,000.
Recently, Dubai Police conducted a raid that led to the arrest of a group accused of hacking into encrypted television channels. This group was reportedly rebroadcasting World Cup matches illegally through various websites and streaming devices, showcasing the ongoing battle against digital piracy in the region.
Cybersecurity experts have pointed out that the rise in subscription fees and the fragmented nature of streaming services are contributing factors to the increase in piracy activities.
