Dubai is embarking on an ambitious project to develop a comprehensive autonomous people mover network at Al Maktoum International Airport, aiming to create the world’s largest automated transport system of its kind. This extensive network, stretching 50 kilometers, will facilitate passenger movement across the sprawling airport via nine stations. Completion of the project is targeted for December 2031, with the airport’s initial phase scheduled to open in 2032. As the airport continues to expand, the underground driverless rail system is set to grow to 14 stations, further enhancing connectivity within the airport complex.

Once operational, this state-of-the-art automated people mover will surpass the capabilities of current systems at major airports like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK. The development of Al Maktoum International Airport is geared towards accommodating up to 260 million passengers and handling 12 million tonnes of cargo each year. The first phase of this massive infrastructure project will feature the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover system, effectively boosting the airport’s passenger handling capacity to 130 million annually.

In addition to its internal transport enhancements, the airport will integrate with broader regional rail networks. Plans include an Airport Express Link that will connect Al Maktoum International Airport with Dubai International Airport, offering seamless travel between these major hubs. Future expansions anticipate connections to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, further embedding the airport into the region’s transportation framework.

The strategic development of Al Maktoum International Airport is poised to transform it into a leading global aviation hub, with its extensive passenger and cargo capacities setting new benchmarks for airport infrastructure. The introduction of the autonomous people mover network is a key component in achieving this vision, promising to deliver efficient and advanced transportation solutions for millions of travelers passing through Dubai.
