Despite experiencing a substantial drop in passenger numbers due to regional conflicts and subsequent flight disruptions, Dubai International Airport (DXB) is projected to maintain its status as the globe’s busiest international airport. Between April and June 2026, the airport facilitated 13 million passengers, a significant decrease from the 22.5 million recorded during the same period in the previous year. This downturn contributed to a first-half passenger traffic total of 31.5 million, marking a 31.3% decline compared to last year.
Paul Griffiths, CEO of Dubai Airports, remains optimistic about the airport’s recovery prospects, anticipating a rebound in passenger traffic during the latter half of the year. This recovery is expected as international airlines resume their services and local carriers such as Emirates and flydubai work towards restoring the majority of their route networks. The airport’s forecast for the year suggests handling approximately 70 million passengers, which is a decrease from the 95.2 million served last year. Consequently, the goal of reaching 100 million annual passengers has now been deferred to 2027.
Currently, DXB has managed to regain about 86% of its operational capacity prior to the regional turmoil that affected aviation activities. The airport now accommodates 56 airlines, a reduction from the roughly 90 airlines it serviced before the disruptions. Nevertheless, Dubai Airports is hopeful for further recovery as the winter travel season approaches, with expectations that more international carriers will resume their flights.
Key passenger markets such as India, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom continue to play a pivotal role in DXB’s operations. The airport’s strategic focus on these markets is likely to support its recovery efforts, helping to stabilize passenger numbers and operations in the coming months. As airlines gradually restore their schedules, the airport is positioned to bounce back and continue its trajectory as a leading global aviation hub.
