A deadly incident involving two UAE-operated oil tankers occurred in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in one fatality and injuries to eight others. The UAE Ministry of Defence reported that the tankers, named Mombasa and Al Bahyah, were hit by Iranian cruise missiles while navigating the southern corridor of this critical maritime channel. The attack led to the death of an Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa, with four of the injured sustaining serious injuries.
The UAE has expressed strong condemnation of the attack, labeling it a grave breach of international law that endangers regional security and maritime routes. Both tankers suffered significant damage from the assault. In response to the incident, Oman’s Maritime Security Centre successfully rescued 18 crew members from the Al Bahyah, although three remain unaccounted for at this time.
India has confirmed the presence of 30 Indian nationals among the 46 crew members aboard the two vessels. The Indian government has denounced the attack, offering condolences for the loss of life and pledging cooperation with local authorities to support those affected by the incident.
This latest attack has intensified existing tensions in the region and has had a notable impact on global oil markets, driving prices to a four-week high due to concerns over the safety of shipping operations through the Strait of Hormuz.
