The United Arab Emirates has entered a period of mourning following the passing of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, a prominent figure in the nation’s history and brother to Dubai’s ruler. Sheikh Ahmed, who passed away on Monday, was honored in a funeral service at Zabeel Grand Mosque before being laid to rest at Umm Hurair Cemetery in Dubai.
In a show of unity and respect, UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, along with other rulers and crown princes from across the Emirates, came together at the Zabeel Majlis to offer their condolences to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai. These leaders included Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi of Sharjah, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi of Fujairah, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla of Umm Al Quwain, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah.
Sheikh Ahmed was remembered for his significant contributions to the UAE since its formation. He held key positions, serving as deputy chairman of Dubai Police and chairman of ARM Holding. His influence extended into sports, notably through his long-standing presidency of Al Wasl Sports Club and the establishment of the Jebel Ali Racecourse in 1990.
To honor Sheikh Ahmed’s legacy, a 10-day mourning period has been declared in Dubai. During this time, the UAE community reflects on his impact on both the country’s governance and its cultural landscape. His leadership and dedication have left a lasting imprint on the UAE, cementing his role as a cherished national figure.
